Golf

Whangamata must be the golfing Mecca of the Coromandel Peninsula, with two golf courses available to local and visiting golf fanatics alike and at least 14 golf courses within 40 minutes drive... It has a strong membership and attracts many thousands of visiting players over the summer months. The two courses, Titoki and Williamson, cater for a huge number of enthusiasts throughout the year.

The Whangamata Golf Club offers visitors the choice of two very different courses.

Williamson Course
The Williamson Course in Achilles Ave in the centre of town is a nine hole course set among pine and other trees with narrow fairways and superb greens, and offers a challenge to any handicap golfer. It is popular with holiday makers with its easy contours, short length and consequently shorter playing time. Casual players may hire clubs at a low rate, and the course is in use all daylight hours in the summer.

Titoki Course
About twenty years ago, the Club decided to purchase a property on Waihi Road on the outskirts of town, and in spite of criticism that flooding would make a course impossible, has now produced an eighteen hole course, full length, with attractive environment. The Wentworth river meanders through the property and is an integral part of the course layout. Here too, are found greens of a standard that has been compared with some of the country's top courses. The 15th hole is well worth the short climb for a spectacular view over the course. Clubhouse facilities have been improved and visitors are welcome and may join as a country member with full playing rights on both courses.

For more golfing in New Zealand, have a look at the New Zealand Golfing World site. It is a great resource for golfers. As well as having a full, national course-list, you can drop by the online golf shop, or read the latest golfing news.

This Sporting page will be updated as often as possible with all local sports.
