1. WENTWORTH FALLS.
South of Whangamata, just past Titoki Golf Course,
turn right into Wentworth Valley Road. Some 3.5kms later cross a
concrete ford, after which you will find a picnic area, continuing on
after another concrete crossing of the river (good swimming spot here),
you soon come to the main camping area - ample parking - though a short
distance further a limited parking spot for walkers and trampers.
Following a well made track on the left bank of the river, cross a side
stream, later on cross the main river, then follow the right bank for
some distance, a forestry sign board shows time to waterfall, a few
moments later rock-hop to the left bank. Now starts the gradual climb
up to the falls, when you hear the sound of the falls you are in the
vicinity of a track on the right, which takes you to the foot of the
falls, though part way down the best views are seen. Only a short
distance later, from the top track, good views down the valley, part of
Whangamata and the off-shore islands. Around the corner and there is
the river tumbling over the falls.
Time 1 ½ hours depending on whether you stopped to admire the bush, river, birds etc.
For the real energetic, continue on upstream following the track, to
the headwaters area, about 1 hour after leaving the falls you would be
over the top onto the trail bike and 4 wheel drive tracks that come
onto the Wines Plateau from the Maratoto Road. If the Waipaheke bike
track is followed for an hour or so there are good lookout points. A
short distance from the Falls track down the clay road is the Tairua
River, just before which, on your right you will find a picnic table
and toilet facilities.
The Loop Road track takes a good 2 hours, includes two crossings of the Tairua River.
2. PARAKAWAI VALLEY.
South
of Whangamata about 6.5kms from town. Immediately after crossing the
Otahu river bridge, turn right into a narrow road. 3-4kms later there
is a small parking area. Across the river you can see the unusual rock
formation, which has been used as a quarry. Grand swimming area
downstream of the river crossing by the way. The walking track follows
the river upstream on the right bank, the entrance is up and over a
small bank at the end of the grassed area.
After
this the track follows mostly along the line of the old horse tram
track, about 1 hour later you join onto a bulldozed track. After
crossing Adams creek the track divides. The dozer track up to the right
goes to the top of the ridge, while ahead to the left tracks lead to
the battery site, the cataract and old mine shafts.
Time about 2 hours from car park.
3. LUCK AT LAST MINE.
A
series of old tracks are open in the upper Wharekawa River, which give
good access to the old mining operation complex in the valley.
An
all-weather track starts from the bridge crossing the Wharekawa River,
on the Taungatara Road. This track follows the Wharekawa River to the
Luck at Last Battery site, and further upstream to the old mine drives.
An alternative route leads from the end of Toru Road.
People are
warned that they enter old mine drives at their own risk, and the
Forest Service accepts no responsibility for their safety.
4. PRITCHARDS KAURI RESERVE.
From
Taungatera Road, 25 minutes walk from the closed gate at the Redwoods
Camp-site. One of the top 20 Kauri's to visit. TE RAITI KAURIS &
FALLS 20 minute walk from the closed gate at Redwoods Camp-site. Good
swimming hole and bush walk.
